What Is Form 1099-NEC?

A 1099-NEC form, also known as a Nonemployee Compensation, is used by businesses and self-employed individuals to report certain types of non-employee payment they have made to others during the year. This document is typically used to report payments made to independent contractors for services they have provided. If you are a business owner or self-employed individual and you have made any payments to independent contractors during the year, you may be required to file Nonemployee Compensation form with the IRS.

A small business (that doesn’t meet the definition of a large one) may voluntarily report coverage for any month for which the employer provided payment to an employee. If you’re a multiemployer plan, you may be able to report services coverage on IRS Form 1099-NEC for 2022.

What Information Is Required for Filling?

  • The name and address of the employer and the nonemployee
  • Recipient’s taxpayer identification number and account details
  • Am amount of the nonemployee’s compensation

Filling & Filing 1099-NEC Form

It must be filed with the IRS and copies sent to the employee. If you’re a payer who made payments of at least $600 in the course of your trade or business to a non-employee during the tax year, you must file a 1099-NEC form for that person. This includes payments for services performed by independent contractors, as well as other types of recompense such as rent, prizes, and awards.

Once you’ve completed the document, you can file it with the IRS in one of two ways:

  • Mail the document to the IRS. The address to mail the blank to will depend on the state where the payee is located. You can find the correct mailing address by using the IRS's online tool or by consulting the instructions for the 1099-NEC.
  • E-file the blank with the IRS. You can e-file the form using the IRS's system, which allows you to file the document electronically instead of mailing it in. This can save you time and make it easier to file your taxes.

The due date for filing is January 31 the year following the tax year in which the payments were made. For example, if you made payments in 2022, you would need to file the report by January 31, 2023.
